Donald Joseph (Sal) Salvati, 84, passed away January 9, 2021 due to COVID-19, in Carlsbad, CA. He was born in 1936 in New Haven, CT, son of Adolph Luciano Salvati and Angelena (Julia) Cannavacciuolo Salvati.
Don graduated 1954 from Wilbur Cross High School, in New Haven. Don joined the Navy to see the world, and that he did!
• He served aboard several ships as the Admiral's Yeoman.
• Orders were then received to report to EXOS, Main Navy building, Washington D.C., where he was assigned to the Military Personnel Office. He met his future wife, Carol when she started working next door in Civilian Personnel.
Don and Carol were married in New Haven, CT in 1959. That was the beginning of a long and interesting life, traveling far and wide.
• One year later, they were transferred to Taipei, Taiwan for three-years.
• Next tour was in Washington D.C. After that he had a three-year tour in Rome, Italy at the American Embassy; Don was promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer.
• Near the end of his tour, he was chosen to attend Officer Candidate School in Athens, GA. Upon completion he was promoted to Warrant Officer 1.
• In 1970, orders were received to report to the USS Hector, home ported in Long Beach, CA.
• After his tour aboard ship, he received orders to NAS Los Alamitos, CA, where he served as the Assistant Navy Exchange Officer. Living in brand new Navy housing was special, meeting many great Navy families.
Don retired from the Navy in 1974 and we moved to San Diego, CA. He was hired to set up the administrative office of the new federal prison in downtown San Diego. then Don began a career as a civilian with the Navy Resale System, where he worked for almost 20 years. While in the Navy Resale System, he spent a year in Memphis, TN and a year in Rota, Spain.
Throughout his life, he continued his education: a Bachelor of Business Administration, Summa Cum Laude; a Masters of Business Administration with the University of Maryland; and National University, San Diego.
Don again retired to play golf. When he realized he could only play just so much golf, he worked for the San Diego Unified School district for seven years.
His life was so enriched by all the places he worked and lived, and all of the people he knew along the way. He enjoyed baseball, bowling, bocce, and his grandkids.
Don is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carol; their three children, Joseph, Steven, and Ann and their spouses; six grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Blanche Rosati, Rita Cruz, Jeanette Proto, Adolph "Sonny" Salvati, Robert Salvati, Dolores Gianfredi, and John Salvati.
Services with military honors and burial were held at Miramar National Cemetery, San Diego, CA.
