Richard was born in Iowa one of Three Sons. He served in WW2 in the Navy and was part of the South Pacific exercise. He later moved to Northern California where he found work as a logger, sawmill worker and roofer. He enjoyed Gold mining and working on old cars most of all. He liked to travel allot not staying in one place long. When he passed on as requested his ashes where spread at a meadow behind his brothers house in Sweetland California.

At the outbreak of the Pacific theater and the attack on Pearl Harbor Richard's ship was in the North Atlantic searching for German Submarines, the USS Long Island departed San Diego 8 July 1942 and arrived Pearl Harbor the 17th. After a training run south to Palmyra Island, the ship loaded two squadrons of Marine Corps aircraft and got underway for the South Pacific 2 August. Five days later, the marines, while landing on Guadalcanal, encountered stiff opposition and needed more air support than could be provided by the handful of carriers available during the early months of the war. Touching Fiji Islands 13 August, Long Island then steamed to a point 200 miles southeast of Guadalcanal and launched her aircraft. These planes, the first to reach Henderson Field, were instrumental in the liberation of Guadalcanal and went on to compile a distinguished war record.

Richard served with his Father aboard the USS Long Island ID 321-66-82 from September 11, 1941 to August 25, 1943 and had the rank of Seaman First Class and was awarded a Battle Star for the fighting on Guadacanal , he served with the 1st Division of the USS Long Island.
