SERVICES HELD FOR J. S. BRANDENBERG
CUSTER-Funeral services were held at Bachelor church Tuesday afternoon, Dec 12, for J. S. Brandenberg, resident of Custer for the past three years, who had previously been a resident of Bachelor for 40 years, coming here when the country was quite new.
Rev. F. E. Stewart of the Bachelor church, who had been an intimate friend of the family, conducted the services, speaking words of comfort to the large family of relatives present.
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Artz of North Eden, Mrs. Joseph Cooper of Scottville and Holly Wilson of South Custer sang "Looking This Way", "Face to Face" and "Abide With Me". Miss Esther Artz played their accompaniment.
Pallbearers were three Custer friends Joseph Sanders, John Wagner and B. T. Hackmuth and three Bachelor friends, Frank Welnert, Herman Kaatz and Frank Pitcher.
Mr. Brandenberg was a faithful member of the Christian church and was taken back to the community where he had worked for the church for burial in the Bachelor cemetery beside his wife, who passed away eight years ago.
Born in 1886
Mr. Brandenberg was born in Huntington county, Indiana on April 15, 1886, where he lived with his parents until he grew to young manhood. About 65 years he was united in marriage near Warsaw, Ind., to Miss Susan Catherine Brandenberg and they continued to make Indiana their home for several years. It was here their family of eight children were born, two passing away while quite young. Forty years ago the family moved to Bachelor where they settled on a farm which was their home until three years ago. Eight years ago the mother passed away and Mr. Brandenberg went to live with his son Dewey. Three years he with the family moved to Custer where Mr. Brandenberg made for himself many friends in the town.
He had been in failing health for the past two and one-half years. Last spring he broke his limb, however, he had seemed better the past few weeks until one week ago when he suffered a stroke from which he never rallied.
Survivors are the four daughters, Mrs. Edith Deling, Mrs. Ellen Finley, Mrs. Bertha Abrahamson, and Mrs. Anna Stults, all of Battle Creek; two sons Dewey of Custer and Ezra of Bachelor; 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, all of whom were in attendance at the funeral which proved to be the first time in their lives that all had been together, also one half-sister, Mrs. Dollie Pennyfather of Indiana.
Attend Funeral
Those from out-of-town who came for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ashar Finley, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Stults, Mrs. Edith Deling and Mrs. Bertha Abrahamson, all of Battle Creek; Ezra Brandenberg of Bachelor, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Finley, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Finley and son Junior of Battle Creek; Mr. and Mrs. Keith Finley and Miss Ethel Finley of Jackson. Bell of Battle Creek. Mr. and Mrs. George Lehmer. Evelyn Ryfield and Lila Brandenberg, all of Muskegon and Mrs, Ada Rogus of Battle Creek.
