An Aged Lady Buried
Funeral of Mrs. Susan E. Parker, a Sister of the Author of the Hymn "America"
The funeral of Susan E. Parker, widow of Jonathan Parker, and old resident of the North End, and the only sister of the late Samuel Francis Smith D.D. author of "America" was held at her home, No 12 Rockland Street Roxbury yesterday afternoon. The remains reposed in the front parlor, and resting on the lid of the casket were a number of flowers.
The services were conducted at 2 o'clock by the Rev. Albert H. Plumb, D.D. of the Walnut Avenue Congregational Church, aided by the assistant pastor, the Rev. Mr. Purdy. Dr. Plumb pronounced some words of eulogy, and he referred touchingly to the life and character of the deceased. There was singing by two ladies. The burial was at Cedar Grove.
Mrs. Parker was born at the North End 94 years ago, and was the daughter of Samuel and Sarah Bryant Smith. Her father was a native of Boston, while her mother was born in Reading. Mrs. Parker was the oldest member of the Warren Avenue Baptist Church.
