James was born on Sept. 5, 1950 in Atlanta, Georgia, son of Elizabeth Raleigh Avrett and the late Emory Avrett. Mr. Avrett proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army, retiring as a sergeant after 23 years of service. During his time in the Army, he was stationed in Korea and also served in Vietnam.
James was a member of East Laurinburg Church of God. He enjoyed hunting and deep sea fishing. Most of all, James loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother Ricky Avrett.
James is survived by his loving wife Rachel Hunt Avrett of the home, daughter, Teresa C. Lee (Donnie) of Monroe, mother Elizabeth Raleigh Avrett of Erwin, Tennessee, brother Herbert Avrett of McDonough, Georgia, sisters Lavoughn Harris of Erwin, Tennessee and Cathy Custidero of Winter Springs, Florida, two grandchildren: Eric Fore and Erica Fore, great-grandchild Anna Simpson, and his loyal canine companions Sadie and Sassy.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel. Burial with full military honors will follow the service at Hillside Memorial Park.
A time of visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service on Tuesday at Richard Boles Funeral Service.
