Lewis Maury Garrett is really the founder of the family in Madison County. The first record of him in Mississippi is the notice of his marriage, taken from a Woodville newspaper: 'Married on Wednesday, 15th instance, by Rev. J.C. Burns, Lewis M. Garrett, Esq. to Sarah Dorcas Singleton, daughter of Hiram Singleton, all of this county'.

It is not known when Lewis and Sarah moved to Madison Co., but they reared their family in Canton. He became an attorney in Canton.

Sarah and Lewis had ten children. Lewis died June 6, 1850 and Sarah September 25, 1878. ... The descendants of the above continued to live in Mississippi. One was editor of a paper in Carthage; another, Joe, moved to Vicksburg. Fontaine and his wife Enna Walker remained in Canton and he was associated with the Canton Exchange Bank until the time of his death. Enna spent her last years in the Canton Nursing Home and gave her estate to the Canton Exchange Bank to be used for charity, especially for the Canton Churches. / All that remains in Madison County of the Garretts are the grave stones and the beautiful stained glass window, Garrett-Cage, in the First Methodist Church of Canton."
