Betty Jane Brooke
October 14, 1932 - January 2, 2021

Betty Jane Brooke, age 88, passed away peacefully at home amongst loved ones January 2, 2021. She was born October 14, 1932, in San Angelo, Texas, to John and Maudie Cameron and had the good fortune of falling in love and marrying twice in her long life: first to Air Force First Lieutenant, and later Captain, John Peter Bartley. Captain Bartley was killed in action in Vietnam in 1963. Almost two years later, as a young widow, she married John Rutter Brooke III of San Antonio. Unfortunately, John died in 1999 due to illness.

Betty's life began during the Great Depression as the eldest of four siblings to a carpenter and homemaker. Her father moved frequently to find work. During this difficult time of her life, Betty became an avid reader, an interest she would enjoy the rest of her life.

Betty was the first person in her family to graduate high school and then college, putting herself through the nursing program at Texas Tech University. Not long after her graduation, she met Pete Bartley and soon married the handsome First Lieutenant. From that happy union came two children, daughter Diane and son John Michael Bartley.

Being a military family, many moves were required. With the untimely death of Captain Bartley, Betty and her two children moved from Florida to San Antonio, Texas, to establish a home closer to her family.

She purchased a house and got involved with the Republican Party of San Antonio. While campaigning for George H.W. Bush for Senate, she met John Brooke. They were soon married at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in downtown San Antonio.

Betty and John went on to have a child. Shannon was the final addition to their blended family.

During summers when John was off from teaching, the family enjoyed traveling by camper to destinations in the west such as Colorado and South Dakota. As time passed, Betty and John enjoyed cruises to Alaska and road trips to the east coast. Sadly, John succumbed to cancer in 1999.

While her children were at home, Betty worked as a Registered Nurse at the main Methodist Hospital (Medical Center) orthopedic ward for approximately 8 years before retiring for the first time. She later returned to Methodist Hospital for another 3 years during a time of financial hardship for the family.

Betty was an avid bridge player, a skill she learned as a military wife, and poker player. She made lifelong friends while enjoying these pursuits.

Her children and grandchildren admired her strength, persistence, and generous nature. These traits she showed in abundance.

Betty is survived by her two daughters, Diane Bartley Dawsey and Shannon Brooke Mantrom; her sister, Laura Ann Keith; and brother, Johnnie Cameron and wife Sandy; her five grandchildren: Thomas Dawsey and wife Rachel, Shawn Dawsey and wife Natasha, Mark Dawsey, Sydney Mantrom, and Chloe Mantrom; as well as five great grandchildren.

We welcome you to celebrate Betty's life with her family. A Viewing is scheduled Tuesday, January 19th, from 5 pm to 7 pm at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 N. Loop 1604 E., San Antonio, Texas.

A Graveside Service will occur on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at 1:30 pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in her memory of Betty Brooke to Shriner's Hospital for Children.
