Sunny was born a daughter of Preston Amory and Helen (Russell) McCartney on June 5, 1939, in Burlington, IA. She was eldest of 10 children. Sunny was united in marriage to Don Ghrist on October 26, 1957 in Burlington. She retired from John Deere after 27 years of service.
Sunny loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren. She had a passion for crafts, such as quilting, crocheting, sewing, and knitting. She also enjoyed collecting Boyd’s Bears and taking trips to Maine.
