Janet Medston Perrigo Brown-Wolff was born in Houlton, Maine to Ellis and Janie Perrigo on October 21st, 1930. She attended public schools in Bangor and Augusta ME. She attended Colby College in Waterville ME and Cornell University's New York Hospital School of Nursing in New York City where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree.

In 1953, she was married to Samuel Gilman Brown II at the Penney Memorial Church in Augusta, ME, and became a United Church of Christ's minister's wife within two weeks after her marriage. She enjoyed this role for twenty-seven years in such communities as Fall River, Worcester and Woburn, MA; Swanzey, NH; Stratford, CT; and Richmond, VT. Janet was a mother of four children, J. Casey Gershon, James Alan Brown, Samuel Gilman Brown III and Anthony Perrigo Brown. She took an active part in their schools and extra curricula activities. She was an active parishioner throughout her life with the latter years being spent at the First Congregational Church of Burlington and Fort Myers, FL Congregational Church.

In 1965, she received her MS in Public Health Nursing from Boston University, School of Nursing and was immediately hired by Boston University School of Nursing to teach in the undergraduate nursing program. She later received a Certificate of Advanced Standing in 1980 from the University of Vermont, and her Doctoral Degree in Educational Administration in 1985 from Boston University, School of Education.

From 1953 through 1999 she was employed by several different hospitals including: Franklin County, Greenfield, MA; Truesdale, Fall River, MA; Peter Bent Brigham, Boston as well as a number of Public Health Departments: Piscataquis County, ME; Massachusetts State Health Department, and the Vermont State Health Department. In addition, she has served in a number of teaching capacities at such institutions of higher learning as Boston University, Boston College, and the University of Vermont. At the University of Vermont, she was a tenured Associate Professor from 1980 - 1996. Between 1974-1989, she obtained many training grants for the education of nurses and the study of aging. She conducted evaluative research on nursing programs of study, including role functions of nurses and nurse performance. Throughout her professional career, she especially enjoyed caring for patients and their families, the nursing profession, and the community in which they served.

In 1973, she was recruited from Boston College by the University of Vermont and the Burlington Visiting Nurse Association to develop one of the

first Nurse Practitioner Programs of its kind in New England. She once stated, "Starting a nurse practitioner's program, in those early days, was a real challenge. The concept and role of the practitioner had to be accepted by the public, as well as by health professionals." The University of Vermont's Certificate Nurse Practitioner Program ended in 1981 and she was instrumental in developing a Master's Nurse Practitioner program and taught the first theory course in that program. In 1990, she spent her Sabbatical Leave at the National Council of Aging in Washington, D.C. She was affiliated with the Adult Day Care Division and assisted in defining the services to be provided; drawing up the guidelines for Adult Day Care facilities; and contributed to the writing of teaching materials for caregivers within ADC facilities. Throughout her professional life and after her retirement, she was sought after consultant and speaker for professional conferences and conventions on the national and state levels, as well as for community-based church and organizational meetings.

From an early age of three, she has performed as a soloist and chorus member in college, churches, and community groups, the most recent being with the Burlington Choral Society in Burlington, VT and the choir of the First Myers Congregational United Church of Christ in Fort Myers, FL. She especially enjoyed listening to and attending concerts of Classical Music. During her retirement years, she spent many hours in planning and caring for the gardens which surrounded John's and her home in South Burlington, VT, and assisting her husband John Wolff in the management of his rental business. In 2003, she won an award from "Burlington Bloom" for the most original/diverse garden.

She was an active member of Chapter C of PEO, and Kappa Tau Chapter of

Sigma Theta Tau, the Honor Society for Nurses. Kappa Tau Chapter of the University of Vermont awarded her the "Excellence in Nursing Education Award

in 1997" and the International Organization published an article in one of their journals about her having developed the certificate nurse practitioner program

in the State of Vermont. In 2009, she was named "Vermont Mother of the Year" by the Vermont State Legislature and the American Mothers of Washington DC, the official sponsor of Mother's Day.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband John L. Wolff Jr, her father, mother, an infant son Francis Ellis Brown, brother Dr. Earl Perrigo, stepdaughter Lynn Newton and former husband, Samuel G. Brown II.
