Mrs. Peggy Jo Young Blackburn passed away at age 86 on December 31, 2020 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Peggy was the loving wife of the late William Wiley "Bill" Blackburn Sr. They were married for almost 60 years.
Peggy was born on October 9, 1934 in Marion, North Carolina, to the late Clara Belle Bowman and the late Audie Ray Young. Peggy is survived by her sister, Joyce Ray Noblitt and brother, Donald Lee (Carolyn) Young; sons, William Wiley (Diane) Blackburn Jr. and Thomas McNeil (Lisa) Blackburn; grandchildren, Anna Elizabeth (Jason) Gladwell, Alexandria Blackburn (Matt) Brintnall, Rachael Kathryn (Mike) Lacenere, Caroline McKenzie Blackburn, and William Patrick Blackburn; and great-grandchildren, Olivia Grace Gladwell, Jason Thomas Gladwell, Wiley Matthews Brintnall, Finley Rose Brintnall, and Lillian Jade Lacenere.
Peggy would go on to work in the Wake County School System, primarily as a bookkeeper. She worked for many years at Millbrook High School. Peggy was also heavily involved in the Athletic Department at Millbrook (particularly with baseball). She loved the Wildcats and would be a faithful supporter for many years. Peggy and Bill had so many friends. And most of those friendships were generated from the years they had spent working in the schools. Peggy was all about her family; and when she began to have grandchildren (five of them), it changed everything. Her grandchildren truly loved her, and she adored them. It was as if she had been waiting her entire life to be a grandmother. Peggy was intent on creating wonderful memories with her grandchildren and she raised those efforts to an artform. Her grandchildren were so special to her. Peggy also had five great-grandchildren, including two who were born in the last year of her life.
Peggy was a cancer survivor. She was a tough fighter - as determined as she was delicate, and it would be a quality that many would most admire in her. Peggy was never really the same after Bill's death in 2018, but her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of great joy for her in the last years of her life. She was special to all who knew her, and her family finds solace in thinking of Peggy reunited with her beloved husband, Bill.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the entire Springmoor community and the exceptional nurses at Wake Med Hospital. A service for family will be held on Saturday, January 23rd, 2021 at Raleigh Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Springmoor Endowment Fund, the Mike Morris Fellowship Fund at First Baptist Church in Raleigh, or the WakeMed Foundation for Nursing Education and Research.
