Mahala Crecelius was the third of five daughters of John Godhard Crecelius & Diana Wilson of Scott Township. At age 19, Mahala married on March 23, 1837 to John William Conrad, son of Jacob Conrad & Mary Yost. J.W. Conrad was born January 28, 1813; died March 15, 1902. The town of Conrad in central Iowa is named after him.

In the spring of 1853, John, a pregnant Mahala, their five children, and Mahala's bachelor brother Adam Crecelius started west from Harrison County, Indiana, in covered wagons. The family rested in Knox County, Illinois, where a daughter Phebe Jennie was born on August 3rd. On August 31, 1853, they arrived in Marshall County, Iowa. They built a log cabin---the second house to be erected in Lafayette (now the town of Albion)---and lived there until April 1855, when the farmhouse where they spent the rest of their lives was built in a grove west of Wolf Creek. This spot provided them with a pioneer's two necessities: water and firewood.

The 1856 census of Grundy County, Iowa, lists seven Crecelius siblings & their families living side by side on the prairie, near Wolf Creek:
Mahala with husband John W. Conrad & 6 children
Adam Crecelius
Mary Crecelius Bartles & her 2 children
Harrison Crecelius
David Crecelius with his wife & 2 sons
George Crecelius with his wife & 2 sons
Phebe with husband Andrew J. Melton & 2 daughters
25 family members in all. And of course more children were born in the ensuing years.

Mahala died March 4, 1898, age 80, after a long illness. Her husband and all seven of their children survived her.
Seated by their parents are daughters Jennie Conrad King, left, and Ellen Conrad Glass, right; standing from left are the other five children: Annibelle Conrad Steelsmith, William A. Conrad, Sarah Conrad Wiley Hurlbutt, Jacob L. Conrad, and Mariah Frances Conrad Wiley. Two Conrad sisters married two Wiley brothers: Sarah married in 1860 to Isaac H. Wiley; Frances married in 1865 to Allen D. Wiley. Please click on the family photo to view a larger version of it.

Buried along the north edge of the cemetery in the same Conrad plot with J.W. & Mahala are their youngest son William, his wife Emma; Will & Emma's infant son Glynn, and their spinster daughter Ada Conrad.
Four of Mahala's siblings also rest in Conrad Cemetery (see individual listings for them): Mary Ann Bartles, Phebe J. Melton, George Crecelius, and Adam Crecelius, along with many of Mahala's numerous descendants.
