Obituary:
George James Mullen, 78, former assistant sports editor at The Inquirer, died yesterday at Delaware County Memorial Hospital. A longtime resident of Southwest Philadelphia, he lived in Drexel Hill in recent years.
A graduate of West Catholic High School, Mr. Mullen broke into the business as a reporter for the Associated Press in 1924, working for its Philadelphia bureau. After three years, he joined The Inquirer's sports staff.
During his 44 years with the newspaper, he covered almost every type of sports competition offered to the public. He wrote about high school, college and professional sports, and he held administrative posts in the department.
Mr. Mullen was responsible for designing page layouts and putting the sports section together during the last 15 years of his career with the newspaper.
His wife, Harriet Line Mullen, casually introduced him to what became a consuming interest - growing roses. She brought home five rose bushes purchased at a corner store.
He planted and grew them. Soon there were more than 250 rose bushes, representing more than 200 varieties, in his back yard. There were also 23 climbing roses and six rose trees.
It didn't stop there. There were also chrysanthemum plantings, beds of ivy, peony bushes and lily-of-the-valley beds - all in a 21-by-60-foot back yard.
A member of the American Rose Society since 1946, he began exhibiting his roses in 1949. He brought home medals and ribbons. Growers took him seriously and asked him to test new roses they were planning to market.
He took pride in the role he played in the introduction of new varieties.
Surviving him are his daughters, Jane Hoban and Ann M. Daudert , and five grandchildren.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
