On December 27, 2020, Noé A. Durán began his journey into his final resting place in heaven, at the age of 90.
Born to Ricardo and Livina Durán, the youngest of twelve children, Noé would learn the value of life through hard work and determination.
With only an eighth grade education, he would travel with his brother to find work. From loading potatoes and onions onto freight trains in Colorado, sheep herding in Wyoming, cleaning out oil tanks and working at a paper factory in California, and many jobs in between, Noé would find his true calling in carpentry. Noé belonged to the California Council of Carpenters and the New Mexico Carpenters Union. Noé built homes, gymnasiums, worked on bridges and highways, customized cabinetry and loved tinkering with his woodworking machine. We all have those wonderful cutting boards that he would make for everyone.
Noé settled down in Luna Canyon in Chacón, New Mexico. It is there that he would raise his family and make a permanent home. Noé had strength, stamina and a work ethic like no other. Noé would be seen many times driving his tractor 30 miles to Peñasco to cut hay for those who needed help.
Noé started the first fire fighter crew in the Mora Valley. Noé also fought fires in Montana, Idaho, Arizona and Canada.
On September 9, 1950, Noé would marry the late Emelia Cruz Durán. They were married for 61 years before Emelia’s passing in 2012. They had one daughter, Lucille and endured the loss of two infant children, Lucy and Johnny. Lucille was the sparkle in Noé’s eyes. She was always by his side and inherited his great thirst of knowledge. Noé was so proud of his daughter and valued her advice. Lucille, along with her husband Harold, would later become his caretakers and together they would make countless puzzles, watch wrestling, cooking shows, and have long discussions about family.
Thank you, Lucille and Harold for taking such good care of him.
Noé and Emelia were foster parents to several children over the years. While they loved them all, one of them, Telesfor Abeyta, was very special and remained in their lives for a very long time. Noe helped raise his only grandchild, Martín Durán. Noe taught him to build, raise cattle, value the land, love your community, and always, always work hard. Martín considered him his dad, and the best role model a person could have. The love and respect for one another was visible to all. They were quite the inseparable pair.
Noé loved his two great grandsons, Derrick and James Durán, with endless pride and adoration. Noé looked forward to their visits and would take them everywhere, teaching them about life at the ranch, and making memories that they will treasure forever. They brought him so much happiness. They loved their Grandpa Noé to no end. Noé also had a brother-in-law, Emilio Váldez, who was also his best friend and sidekick. They worked together, traveled together, laughed together, tried to fix things that couldn’t be fixed together and called each other every night. Those two were quite a twosome.
Noé also inherited four great grandchildren, LouAnna, George, Jordan and Jaryd Márquez, when Martín married Christine. Noé welcomed them all with open arms and loved telling them stories about his upbringing. Noé would get a kick out of them trying to work the ranch, as they were true city folk.
Noé was visited many times by his nephews and nieces, who traveled to spend time with him. Noé always made everyone feel right at home and loved their company. For many, it was a yearly ritual to go to Chacón and hang out with Uncle Noé. A lot of laughs, tears, and swapping stories that could last days, made for cherished memories.
Noé, a true man of character, will be deeply missed by his family, relatives, and friends. It’s not what you take with you when you die, but what you leave behind. Noé left priceless and invaluable lessons for all of us. We can only hope to succeed and continue to make him proud.
Noé, you have worked very hard all of your life, it is time to rest in eternal peace.
