He was the son of Mary Ann "Polly" Branscomb and John Buttrum from Wayne County, Kentucky. It is believed he may have been adopted by them as he was not in their household when it was enumerated in 1850 and has not been found on any census for that year.

"Fern Cemetery is a very old Cemetery apparently started in the 1840's. Fern is on Gilead Church Road, approximately 2 miles East of Rt. 45. The cemetery is located on the grounds of the Triple T Cedar Lake RV park."

"Thomas and Amanda moved near Creal Springs, Illinois by 1920. Thomas J. Buttrum died on May 13, 1921. The death certificate shows Thomas died of 'Influenza, paralysis of the stattis'. Thomas was buried at Fern Cemetery near Tunnel Hill."

"Amanda died February 24, 1934 and was also buried at Fern Cemetery. Several of Thomas' children who died during childhood as well as his first wife, Pherely, are also buried at Fern."
