Justine Caroline Lichte was born 23 Aug 1856 in Warren County, MO; her gravestone lists birth year of 1857. She was baptized 13 Sep 1856 at the Smith Creek United Methodist Church, Warren County, MO. With her parents and siblings, she moved to Montgomery County, MO, where she grew up and married Joshua Huffman in 1883. This couple moved west sometime around 1890 living in ID and then on to WA. Caroline passed away in Mesa County, Colorado, January 9, 1911. The Carrie Huffman family was traced through a 1968 probate record of her cousin, Matilda Klusmeyer. This record of Heirs of Matilda Klusmeyer listed just one child of Caroline Huffman (1856-1911): George F. Huffman (1890-1960). Carrie's granddaughter, Evelyn Justine (Huffman) Ginnold, of Spokane, Washington, wrote in a 1976 letter that her father, George, had one sister, Fern A. Huffman. Fern was born October 20, 1897 and passed away August 16, 1950; she married George A. Schau. Mrs. Ginnold wrote that George and Fern Huffman "...had three other brothers or sisters who died on the way out from Missouri." This corroborated the family history that persisted through the years: Caroline's family suffered a devastating loss. The general information was that several children reportedly passed away on the move to the west or in a return visit to Missouri. This tragedy cast its shadow though the years and survived to be told by this descendant of Caroline. The Huffman family had five children, but only two were to survive: George and Fern.
