Betty L (Fish) Maser was born on June 14, 1934 to Nelson and Hazel (Thayer) Fish in Gordon, NE. Hazel suffered complications at child birth and passed away after giving birth to Betty. Betty was raised by her paternal grandparents Clarence and Susie Thayer of Gordon, NE. Betty grew up alongside her aunt Bessie Thayer and cousin Charles Clossen. Betty as a teenager worked in her Aunt and Uncles diner and after graduating from high school continued to work there where she met her future husband Gene Graham. They were married and from this union had a son Larry while residing in Kimball, NE.
Betty attended college to become a nurse after completing her education, Betty started working at Kimball County Hospital as a surgical nurse. While Betty was attending a Nursing conference in North Platte, NE she met George Maser Jr. who was attending another conference in North Platte. They visited and George started calling Betty and they began dating long distance. They were married on August 19, 1968. Betty and Larry moved to Waverly, NE to live with George and his daughter Gina. The four of them became a close knit family.
Betty and George loved to travel and once George retired they spent many months on the road seeing different parts of the United States. They loved to travel to California to visit with Chuck and his family as well as stopping in Las Vegas to gamble and see the shows. Every fall they traveled to Bessie and her husband Hod’s place near Gordon, NE to deer hunt. Betty and George also enjoyed fishing and spent many days on the water with their grandchildren teaching them to fish. Betty and George had a cabin on the Platte River and after each summer season of fishing would host a large fish fry for family and friends. Betty and George also took all four grandchildren on a special vacations. Betty enjoyed playing cards with friends and family and taught her grandchildren how to play her favorite card games Shanghai and Scat. Every holiday and family dinner, time was set aside to play cards with her. Everyone knew a visit with Betty would include a new joke she wanted to share with others and Betty had a natural talent for telling them.
She was a bright spot in everyone’s life as she found the good in all she met. Her gift to her family was one of unconditional love and the need to forgive. Betty believed everyone deserved a second chance and lived by that belief.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years George Maser Jr, brother Jim, sister Velma and beloved Aunt Bessie.
