He was born on May 30, 1934 in Amherst, Ohio and lived his whole life in Sandusky. He was a 1952 graduate of Sandusky High School, where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He was inducted into the Sandusky Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. He also obtained an Associate Degree in Fire Science from Owens Technical College.
He was a 28 ½ year veteran of the Sandusky Fire Department, retiring in 1988 as an Assistant Chief. He was also the coordinator for the Erie County Emergency Management Agency from 1979-1987, where he was instrumental in drawing up the first complete disaster plan for Erie County.
He served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict with tours of duty at Marine Barracks in D.C. on the silent drill team, in Naples, Italy as security for NATO facilities, the 6th Fleet (then at Camp Pendleton) with the 3rd Battalion 1st Marines, then as an instructor.
He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, a life member of the Marine Corps League #1192 Firelands Detachment, a life member of the Sandusky Eagles #444, serving as President and also as a member of the ritual team, a life member of VFW Post #2529 and AMVETS Post 17, and a member of the American Legion Post 83 and the Police and Fire Retirees of Ohio.
Howard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sandra (Walker) Elgart; daughters, Darlene Maschari and Chris Hedberg; brother, Richard (Debbie); grandchildren, Taylor Hedberg and Marcus Elgart; great-grandchildren, Ryker and Nyla Slauterbeck; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence and Adam Elgart; son, Leonard Elgart; grandson, Derek Elgart; sister, Joyce Hunter; half-sisters, Linda Elgart, Wilma Sprague, and Betty Jean Rickard; and son-in-law, Mike Maschari.
