Joseph Freeman Benecke

Joseph Freeman Benecke, 76, of Everett, died June 13, 2009.
Joe was born on August 31 1932 in Norfolk, Virginia, son of Iberra Crowe and Joseph Freeman Benecke Sr. A graduate of Stanwood High School and Washington State University, Joe served the Everett Police Department for 25 years, earning decorations for outstanding service; also 20 years as a Civil Service Commissioner. In addition to his work for the city Joe pioneered security service for Providence Medical Center Everett. Hired by Sister Louise Elaine to watch over the Emergency Room on Friday nights, his moonlight shift evolved into a parallel 25-year career as head of Providence Security. As a Mason and member of Shurtah Club, Joe enjoyed raising funds for children's hospitals.
Joe retired from police work in 1988, from security in 1992.
In his final several years, Joe battled progressive kidney disease. Thanks go out to Dr. Thao Pascual and the Providence Medical center staff, Colby Center's floors Three and Five for their tireless care; also a special thanks to the Puget Sound Kidney Clinic and its staff. Joe benefitted from the most advanced treatments available for kidney disease, a condition that affects 20 million Americans.
Joe is survived by his sister, Shirley; and daughter Sharon; his grandchildren, Christopher and Olivia; his nephews, Victor and Mark; his niece, Donna; his step-mother, Mary; his ex wife, Eva; and his partner, Eleanor Turner.
Friends and partners for decades, Joe and Eleanor worked together before and after retirement. Eleanor maintained over three years of round-the-clock home care for Joe before his condition demanded hospitalization. He passed without pain and with considerable bravery, asking only that she be by his side.
Time and place of memorial services remain pending.
