Evans, Ga - Baxton B. “Pete” Garland, 82, entered into rest on December 21, 2020 at University Hospital in Augusta.
Pete was a native of Augusta. He was the son of the late John Thomas Garland and the late Maude Gertrude Newton Garland. He was a graduate of the Academy of Richmond County, Junior College of Augusta, Georgia Teachers College (Currently known as Georgia Southern University) and received his two graduate Degrees from Georgia Southern University. The first three years of his forty-one year career in public education was at Evans High School-Columbia County starting in 1959. He taught three years at Tubman Junior High School prior to becoming a School Administrator. He served as Principal at Martha Lester Elementary, Lawton B. Evans Elementary, Barton Chapel Road Elementary and Bayvale Elementary. He served as a Consultant to Special Education toward the completion of his career. He served five years as Director of Education with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Augusta. He enjoyed officiating High School Sports. He was a member of Abilene Baptist Church and attended the Dave Hester Sunday School Class. He was awarded an Honorary Life-time Membership presented by the Georgia Association of P.T.A.; AMBUCS Young Educator of the Year; and Outstanding Educator by the Georgia Council for Exceptional Students. Pete was a member and Past Secretary of the Exchange Club of Augusta.
Pete is survived by his beloved wife: Roberta Nell Hartley Garland; sons: Thomas Dewey Garland (Lora) of Grovetown, GA and John Pierce Garland of Evans, GA. His stepsons: Robert Graham Newsome III (Crystal) and Ronald Greg Newsome. His granddaughters: Elizabeth Garland, Grace Garland, Kayla Garland Prater (Mark), Ashley Garland, Hailey Jones (Levi), Sarah Nell Newsome, Julia Newsome and grandson: Ronald Greg Newsome Jr. His great grandchildren: Raelynn Diane, Paisley Rae and Palmer Jade Prater, Harper Whitney and River Grace Garland, Cooper and Liam Jones (named after his Papa).
Pallbearers were: Chris Gray, Clifton and David Hughes, Paul Ikner, Scott Hembree, Roy Baerne, Tim Stewart.
Honorary Pallbearers were members of the Augusta Exchange Club.
The funeral service was held Saturday, December 26, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son, with Rev. William F. Harrell and Rev. Terry Doss Officiating. Interment followed in Abilene Baptist Church Cemetery.
