The Rev. Michael Joseph Knecht, 62, former pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Westphalia, died Sunday at a Springfield hospital after an illness of two years. Father Knecht was born Feb. 6, 1902, at St. Louis, the son of Frank C. and Mary Glass Knecht.

He attended school at St. Laborius, Our Lady of Sorrows, St. John the Baptist, Loyola Hall and Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis.

He was ordained into the priesthood on June 8, 1927, by the late Cardinal John Glennon.

He served as assistant pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Michaels churches in St. Louis. He was appointed pastor at St. Joseph's Church in Advance where he served from 1930 to 1936. In 1936 he was assigned to St. Joseph's Church in Apple Creek where he served from 1936 to 1948. In 1948 Father Knecht was appointed pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Westphalia. He retired in 1962 because of ill health.

He is survived by one brother, Brother Edward, O.F.M., Oak Forest, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. John Plassmeier and Mrs. John Jasper, both of St. Louis.

The body will lie in state at St. Joseph's Church, Westphalia, from 2 p.m. today until funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday. The Most Rev. Joseph M. Marling, bishop of the Jefferson City Diocese, will celebrate Mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
