Son of Col. John T. Anderson, a lawyer and State Legislator, and Cassandra (Shanks) Patton, the widow of William Patton.
Studied at the Botetourt Seminary, and at W.R. Galt's school in Buchanan, VA, before attending University of Virginia (1854-1855, 1856-1857, 1858-1859), graduating at top of class in Law.
The day after graduation, on 30 Jan. 1859, he married Susan Watson Morris (b.@1832) of Charlottesville, VA.
Began practicing law, but because of his health, retired to farming and became a planter. The couple had two children, Anna M. and John T. Anderson.
At the organization of "The Mountain Men" military unit in December 1859, he was elected 1st Lieutenant of the company, and after the secession of Virginia from the Union, he was elected Captain.

A 24 year-old farmer/planter, he enlisted on 5/15/1861 at Buchanan, VA., as part of the "Mountain Men", which joined the Confederate Army, and traveled 50 miles to Lynchburg, VA., where on 5/16/1861 he was commissioned as Captain of his Company "Mountain Rifles". (This company subsequently became Company H, 28th Virginia Infantry.)
On 12/24/1861 the company was transferred into Botetourt Virginia Light Artillery as Company A.
In spring 1862, the Botetourt Artillery was ordered to East Tennessee, then in 1863, to Vicksburg, MS.

Promoted to Major 4/4/1863.
