Like many of the Sisters of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, Sister Melanie was of Slovakian descent. She became a teacher with the order and taught primary school music for 58 years. For 13 years, she also served as a school principal. She loved music, teaching students piano and singing in the choir.

Sister Melanie had a twin sister who died at birth. She made her profession of vows on 4 May 1936 and would have celebrated 70 years in the order the year she passed away.

She was a sweet and kind lady, and a fluent speaker of Slovak.
