Ann Calhoun Ames Groves Gurman (Age 102) Died on Friday, December 18, 2020, at the Vinson Hall Retirement Community in McLean, VA. She was a longtime resident of Arlington, VA, Charles Town, WV, and Lake Placid, FL. Mrs. Groves Gurman was born on October 26, 1918, in Washington, DC, the daughter of Henry and Clara Moore Ames. Her long and eventful life included surviving the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, extensive travel during her family's military assignments in Europe and Asia, and a final battle with the COVID-19 virus. A 1940 graduate of the University of Maryland, Mrs. Groves Gurman also attended Grenada (Miss.) Junior College and received a diploma from Washington and Lee High School in Arlington. She married Army Capt. Joseph R. Groves in 1941; he retired as a colonel and died in 1997. She married Ernest G. Gurman in 1999; he died in 2009. Mrs. Groves Gurman was an active participant and leader in numerous organizations, including the American Red Cross unit in Tokyo (during her husband Joseph Groves's post-World War II military assignment in Japan); Daughters of the American Revolution; the Jefferson County (WV) Historical Association; the Patriots and Founders of America; the Northern Neck (VA) Historical Society; and garden clubs in Virginia, West Virginia and Florida. She was a nationally accredited Life Flower Show Judge and Master Flower Show Judge. Golf, flower-arranging and painting were among her other interests; she won a variety of honors in each pursuit. Mrs. Groves Gurman was also a pageant winner, serving as Miss Arlington in 1936. In addition, she was a teacher at Franklin Sherman Elementary School in McLean for 10 years (1962-72). Mrs. Groves Gurman was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in McLean, Mt. Zion Episcopal Church in Charles Town and St. Francis of Assisi Anglican Episcopal Church in Lake Placid. Her survivors include one son, Joseph R. Groves Jr. of Heathsville, VA; two daughters, Ann Groves Page of McLean, VA and Clare Groves Hendrix of Winchester, VA; one stepdaughter, Judith Craig of San Antonio; one stepson, Ernest G. Gurman Jr. of Jupiter, FL; seven grandchildren, Eric, Scott, Jonathan and Merle Groves, Allison Lurton, Tyler Page and Joseph Caruso; five great-grandchildren, Delaney Ann Groves, Ashley Anderson, Jackson and Scarlett Page and Van Lurton; one great-great granddaughter, Aubrey Anderson; one brother, Henry P. Ames Jr. of San Rafael, CA; and several nieces and nephews. Two sisters and one half brother are deceased, Gene Strock and Farley Whitley, and William Moore Ames. Money and King Funeral Home in Vienna, VA, is in charge of the arrangements. Additional details will be announced later; a burial in Arlington National Cemetery is planned.
