Gladys J. Simmons, 84, passed away Monday, December 14, 2020, at her home in Tipton, surrounded by loving family.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no public visitation or funeral services.

Private family graveside services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 18, with Rev. Ron Lashmit officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery, Tipton, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice in her memory. All cards and memorials are to be mailed to: Donald Simmons, 303 Orange Street, Tipton, IA 52772.

Gladys Jean Thurston was born May 12, 1936, in Tipton, the daughter of Samuel Herbert and Leona Mae (Wagner) Thurston. She graduated from Tipton High School with the Class of 1954. She married Donald Lewis Simmons on October 13, 1956, at the Methodist Chapel in Iowa City. They were blessed with two daughters, Tina Renae and Darcy Lynn. She was a homemaker and also was employed with the Cedar County Workshop in Tipton, helping the handicapped for 15 years. She was a member of the Cedar County Peacemakers Quilt Guild and was a talented and avid crafter and enjoyed going to craft shows and on outings with her family. She enjoyed watching the red cardinals outside her window and watching videos of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Above all, she loved the time she spent with her family.

Surviving are her husband, Donald; two daughters, Tina Renae (Roger) Woode of Lake Mary, FL, and Darcy Lynn (Kary) Miller of Ely; three sisters, Marie Aegeter-Ratcliff of Arkansas, Velma Mae Robinson of Stanwood and Joanne Daufeldt of Tipton; two brothers, Rudy Thurston of Tipton and Dan Thurston of Michigan; two granddaughters, Jennifer (Matt) Hahn and Jamie (Matt) McClung; and four great-grandchildren, Dylan and Mia Hahn and Olivia and Chase McClung.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Violet Wiskus and Margaret Garmon, one niece, Sonja Garmon and one nephew, Samuel Wiskus.
