Dean was born on August 24, 1934 to George D. and Jean (Sulser) Curtis in Centerville, IA.
Dean spent his growing up years tagging along with his Grandpa Harley, who he was sure could “walk on water.” Starting at the age of 14, Dean was a truck driver, travelling from the west coast to east coast, from Canada to Mexico, his CB Handles were Woodchopper and Auctioneer. Dean loved and lived life to the fullest and was always ready for the next big adventure. He worked at many places and different jobs over the years including building towers in Louisiana in the Bayou, picking cotton in Alabama, was a gravedigger, an auctioneer, a logger, a bar tender and bouncer, owned and operated a boat repair and bait shop, was a high-rise window washer, was a welder, junk man, and fabricator, and a wrecker operator, and he also raised goats, mules, and Mountain Curs and Jack Russel Terriers.
Dean collected John Deere tractors and mowers, and metal toy vehicles. He enjoyed painting pictures, fishing and hunting coyotes and coons and fur trapping. Dean lived an exciting life and was a great story teller. He once travelled across South America on his Harley in the 1950’s. He later met open heart surgery, having 4 by-passes, head on, battled ugly cancer, and Diabetes was his worst enemy.
Dean is survived by: two sons, Joey Dean and wife Pam Curtis of Centerville, Iowa, Dennis and wife Cathy Curtis of Prescott Valley, Arizona; three daughters, Sharon Lynn and husband William Conger of Milan, Illinois, Shelia Curtis of Huxley, Iowa, and Deana and husband Joel Marwitz of LeMars, Iowa; two sisters, Elaine and husband Carl Spaur of Albia, Iowa, and Anita Snyder of Browning, Missouri; one brother, John and wife Rae Ann Curtis of Temple Terrace, Florida; several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and a best buddy, Bo.
Dean was preceded in death by: His parents; an infant brother; a brother-in-law, Jack Snyder; and a nephew, Jeffrey Snyder.
A private inurnment will be held at a later date at the Brushy Cemetery in Plano, Iowa. Schoene-Ruschmeier Funeral Home in Milan is handling arrangements.
