Uncle Arv

Orval Thomas also known as Arv or Arval, was the third child born to Frank and Fannie (Kinslow) Wilson on February 27, 1896 in Neosho, Missouri. He had whooping cough as a child, left school at age 16 and had the measles at 17. His religious preference was Protestant. As an adult he had no more than a glass of whiskey a week and about 10 cigarettes a day. He stood 5' 7.5", had black hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion.

Arv, was one of Grandpa's three brothers who served in the US Army, during World War I. Arv was in the Medical Department and served in the same unit as his brother Alac, 90th Division, 315th Sanitary Train, Field Hospital #360. I have a photo of the two of them in uniform and it appears they have Medical Corps insignia on their collars. Their brother William was not so lucky, he served in the Infantry and died of wounds, he is buried in France, at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery.

Arv was inducted June of 1918 and was sent to Fort Riley in Kansas. On September 11, he departed the US and arrived overseas September 29th, Arv served six months in France. In December of 1918 he caught a cold. In February of the following year Arv had a noticeable cough, along with fever, headaches and pain in his chest. Arv was diagnosed with Chronic Active Pulmonary Tuberculosis, in both upper lobes and it also later went into his left lower lobe. Arv was sent to Field Hospital # 358 and four other units before entering the General Hospital #16 at New Haven, Connecticut. Arv remained there for about a month. Then he transferred to the U.S.A. Army General Hospital #21 at Denver, Colorado in June of 1919. Arv wanted to go there, being it was the hospital nearest his home in Bristow, Oklahoma. Arv was honorably discharged January of 1920 in poor health and was paid a total of $98.

Uncle Arv married Nora Calmira Norton on November 28, 1923. They did not have any children. Arv passed away in February of 1964 from a heart attack at the age of 67 and Nora in December of 1972 she was 76. They are buried side by side in the Bristow City Cemetery, section 1.
