His physical description was age 27 years, blue eyes, drk hir, fair complextion, 5'8" tall. Battles in which he was engaged included Port Gibson, Champion Hills, Black River Bridge, Assault on Vicksburg, Siege of Bicksburg and Winchester, Virginia. He was mustered out at Savannah, Georgia, on July 25, 1865.
After the war he had a harness shop in Urbana, Missouri. His first wife, Armelda Burris died in Urbana in 1888. Joseph married Margaret "Maggie" McDowell in 1890. Joseph, born 1834 in Greene County, Tennessee, died in Urbana, Missouri, in 1909.
