Married Elvira Fitzgerald. Died of consumption. DANIEL G. WINEGAR enlisted as a private in the 95th Illinois infantry August 14, 1862; his letters bear witness to the siege of Vicksburg, the battle of Franklin, and the capture of Mobile, as well as his own battles with measles, dysentery, and typhoid. Winegar survived the war and was mustered out of service in August 17, 1865. Thirty-one-year-old, Daniel Winegar, left his wife, Elvira, and their two small children when he left Belvidere, Illinois, in the ranks of the 95th Illinois Regiment. "I would not have enlisted," he wrote, "only I thought it was my duty to defend our Country." And so, in like manner, men all over the Midwest left wife, children, and livelihood to enter the army.
