Rosie was born July 12, 1924, in Dallas, South Dakota, to Victor and Mary Taggart. Preceding her in death are her parents, and her siblings: Charles Taggart (Frances), Mike Taggart (Wanda), Dorothy T. Hibbs (Richard), Mary T. Hammon (Dale) and Pat Taggart; and sisters-in-law Joan Taggart and Lillian Taggart; also, her sons Victor Lee, Michael Joe, and Carey Andrew Burns; and great-great granddaughter, Thea Jane Phillips.
Left to cherish her memory are her brothers John, and Frank Taggart (Cookie) and sister-in-law Colleen Taggart Abernathy. “Rosie” and “Roz” as she was well known had 15 children, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren and many loved nieces and nephews. Her children, Nancy Williams and William Ellington, Maureen (Eli) Kirkham; Charles and Nancy Burns, Deborah and Carey White, Jennifer and Kent Hiser, Larry and Margaret Burns, Philip and Anita Burns, Barbara and John Garcia, Carol and John Gates, Jocelyn and Terry Green, Elizabeth Burns and Karl Bertrand, David and Jodi Burns, and their loved sister Mary and Willis Capo.
She spent her youth during the Depression attending school and working on the family farm outside of Colome, SD. On graduating from high school at 16 she attended Notre Dame College in Mitchell, SD (the ‘other’ Fighting Irish!), and then spent the war years teaching in a one and two room school in South Dakota. After the war she met and married Charles Harold Burns of Shreveport. She was a homemaker as they lived in several locations in Louisiana before settling into Shreveport. Rosalind was a life-long Catholic and a long-time member of St. John’s Catholic Church, and was active with St. John’s, Jesuit, and St. Vincent’s Academy during her children’s school years. She was also a Directory Assistance Operator and Supervisor for South Central Bell for many years, working the downtown Shreveport and Dee Street locations before her retirement in 1990. She spent her retirement years traveling most of the country and enjoying time with family. She died in her long-time home in Broadmoor.
The Burns Family would like to extend their warmest thanks to the amazing caregivers at Spencer Care Services; Stephanie, Renita, Brandy, Raquel, and Tiffany, have all shown mother incredible compassion, respect, dignity, and the utmost love, for which we are deeply grateful. Thank you to the Hospice Care group with Amedisys and Brandi Peterson and staff that helped her during her final days.
