Paul Hewitson was drafted into military service. Following basic and advanced training, he received orders to Vietnam, arriving on 25 May 1968. He was assigned to D Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry.

On 13 July 1968, PFC Hewitson and another soldier were killed in a firefight about 5 kilometers south of Phuoc Vinh City in Binh Duong Province, South Vietnam.

His family buried him in Sunnyslope Cemetery. His parents, Herbert and Betty Hewitson, are buried here too.
