Mary Effie Dykes was a daughter of Landon Brandon Dykes 1834–1893 and Sarah Elizabeth Parks 1847–1911.

Effie had four sisters: Nancy, Ida, Larthenia and Fannie; and two brothers: John and James.

Effie married James William Embrey Jr on September 20, 1883 in Clay County, Missouri. Together they raised their four children: Nannie Ireana, Luttie Ellen, William Landon and Wilbur Clyde Embrey.
