U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Princeton University, in 1954 and attended Balliol College, Oxford, England, as a Rhodes Scholar (1954-57). Returning to America, he graduated from the Harvard Law School, in 1960, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Baltimore, Maryland. Entering politics, he was clerk to the U.S. Court of Appeals Fourth Judicial Circuit (1960-61), legislative draftsman for the Maryland Department of Legislative Reference and a member of the Maryland General Assembly, in 1961. He also was administrative assistant to chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers (1962-63), executive director of the Charter Revision Commission of Baltimore City (1963-64) and a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, (1967-71). In 1971, he was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-second Congress, reelected to the Ninety-third and Ninety-fourth Congresses, serving until 1977. Not a candidate for reelection, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving 1977-2007. He was longest serving Senator in Maryland history. Not to seeking reelection, he lived in retirement until his death. His son John Sarbanes, is also a U.S. Congressman serving since 2007, to present.
