NEIGHBORS HAD FEARS
Health Office Acts on Talk That Youngsters Were Not Progressing Favorably
Alice Sugrue, age 10, and Leonard Sugrue, age 8, E 210 Seventh avenue, scarlet fever convalescents, were taken to the Rivercrest contagion hospital yesterday by the city health office to join their mother and two sisters, who went to Rivercrest Wednesday.
Lester Sugrue, the father, died last Sunday of infectious tonsillitis and another son died January 19 from complications following an attack of scarlet fever.
After the mother and two daughters were taken to Rivercrest Wednesday, Alice and Leonard Sugrue were left in the care of an aunt. Some objections were made by the neighbors, who said the children were not getting along as well as they should. To quiet fears of this kind, Dr. John B. Anderson, city health officer, concluded yesterday to take the children to the hospital.
"The Sugrue patients are getting along nicely, even the condition of the baby, 4 years old, showing great improvement," said Dr. Anderson last night. We would have taken the scarlet fever patients to Rivercrest before the death of the father, but the family objected. They will now receive every care that skilled nursing can give. The younger child is still quite sick."
According to reports received by the city health office the Sugrue children contracted scarlet fever in the Louis Alcott school in East Spokane.
