Harvey C. Briggs was born June 7, 1930 in Cherokee County, Oklahoma to Andrew Jackson “Andy” and Effie Velma (Young) Briggs. Harvey served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He drove a jeep, and although Harvey did not think his service was as commendable as those who were in combat, others knew his service was vital to the war. He was honored to be selected for the Honors Flight, but did not get to go as it was cancelled this year several times.

Harvey married the love of his life, Norma Lois (Wright) on May 28, 1955. They were married for 64 years, until her passing in 2019. They were longtime Wagoner residents and were members of the Hillcrest Freewill Baptist Church. He was a member of Wagoner Masonic Lodge #98.

Harvey loved to sing, especially in the church. His father sang at many funerals when Harvey was growing up, so he learned early on. His daughters remember how he would sing to them when they were young. Two of his favorite songs to sing were “Precious Memories” and “Old Rugged Cross”

Throughout his life Harvey always enjoyed planting a garden. He always stayed active, even in his later years. He liked to walk and enjoyed hunting and fishing. For years he went to Texas for fishing and Nebraska for hunting.

In his first career Harvey was a mechanic for American Airlines. He was honored to part of the team building the Apollo rockets in Huntsville, AL. He was privileged to say he contributed to putting the first man on the moon.

In his second career Harvey was a firefighter for the City of Wagoner, from which he retired. In retirement Harvey and Norma travelled a great deal. They loved to spend the summers in Colorado and winters in south Texas.

At the age of 90 years, Harvey departed this life Thursday, December 3, 2020 in Tulsa, OK. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Briggs; his parents, Andy and Velma Briggs; his siblings, Jesse Delmer Briggs, Lois Briggs Wells, Kenneth “Dick” Rhodes and Dencil Briggs.

Left to cherish his memory are two daughters and their husbands, Beth and Freddie Gardenhire of Wagoner and Margie and Ron Ross of Wagoner; five grandchildren and spouses, Kevin and Laura Gardenhire, Justin and Lindsey Gardenhire, Joey and Nicole Ross, Nic and Kendra Ross and Mary Ross and Bre; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Joyce (Briggs) Gardner and husband, Loren; two sisters-in-law, Betty Fenton and Wanda Rice and husband, Willie; other relatives and friends and Harvey’s daily companion, his dog, Penny.
