Ruth E. Totten, 78; essayist and speaker, daughter of Gen. Patton

A memorial service will be held tomorrow for Ruth Ellen (Patton) Totten, a lecturer on military history and the daughter of the late Gen. George S. Patton Jr., who died Thanksgiving Day in her home in Hamilton. She was 78.
Mrs. Totten was born in Pasadena, Calif. As the daughter of General Patton and wife of the late Major Gen. James W. Totten, she had lived in many overseas locations, including Hawaii, Panama, Turkey and Brazil. She had lived in South Hamilton since 1967.

She was a speaker and essayist on the Salem Witch Trials, the customs of the American Plains Indians, Major Gen. George Armstrong Custer and the customs and traditions of the Army.

She was the founder of the Army Distaff Foundation and wrote, and published a cookbook, "The Rolling Kitchen" to benefit the group. She had a lifetime of interest in helping children with learning disabilities and had been a member of the board of trustees of the Landmark School in Manchester-by-the-See and the Lab School in Washington.

She also was an avid gardener, with a particular interest in medicinal herbs. She was a member of the North Shore Garden Club, the Society of Colonial Dames and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She Leaves a brother, retired Major Gen. George S. Patton of South Hamilton; two sons, Michael Totten of Carlisle, Pa., and James P. Totten of Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter, Beatrice T. Britton of South Hamilton; and six grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in St. John's Episcopal Church in Beverly Farms. Burial is private.
