On New Years day when Jeremiah was 19 years of age he sailed on a privateer from New Bedford. The ship was taken over and he served some time in the prison ship 'Jersey'. Gideon served in several Regiments of Massachusetts Milita, serving as a private and corporal. He was reported to have been with General Washington at Valley Forge. Gideons name appears , along with other veterans, on a Revoluntionary War Memorial in the town of Honesdale, Wayne county, Pennsylvania and on a bronze tablet at Valley Forge.

He was married on 7 October, 1781 to Aimie Carter, whose parentage is uncertain, but she was from Dartmouth. She was raised in Dartmouth by a family and took their family name.

In 1816 Gideon and his family arrived in Preston Township, Wayne County Pennsylvania, and they are listed as one of the pioneer families of this county. They remained in that area the rest of their lives.
