Evelyn Galen, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, died at home Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, after a brief illness.

Evie was born in Portland to Edward T. and Belle Brounstein. She attended Garfield High School in Seattle, the University of Washington and the University of Oregon. She and Morris Galen married on July 15, 1951, in Portland where he began his career as a lawyer. Morrie and Evie shared an extraordinary marital bond for more than 56 years. Together they raised two children, Solana and Candace, instilling in them a lifelong love of nature, the arts and all things culinary.

Evie and Morrie traveled the world, but the Oregon coast was always home to them. Evie was happiest there, surrounded by her family, the sea grass, and the jewel like light of the sun slipping beneath the horizon into the Pacific. She was always watching for the "green flash."

Evie was an avid Oregonian, a benefactor of local arts and civic causes, and a volunteer for many organizations. She read passionately and had a knack for finding the best books for her many nieces and nephews who called her "the book aunty."

Evie is survived by her husband; daughter, Candi and Candi's lifetime partner, Shelly Ossana; son, Solana and Solana's wife, Maria Sandoval; and two beautiful grandchildren, Elena and Alexander Ossana-Galen.
