He was born a son of Clarence K and Dorothy S (Hoover) in Chambersburg PA. Robert was a graduate of Chambersburg High School. He married Marie Belle Gift in Trinity Lutheran Church of Hagerstown MD on 28 Jun 1924. To their union were born two sons: Robert Hans and Thomas Ray.

Mr. Gabler opened a variety store at 73 North Main street in Chambersburg in 1934. He was engaged in manufacturing of toilet articles and held a traveling position at that time.

He purchased the former Parnell Tavern located between Chambersburg and St. Thomas on Lincoln Highway. After renovations were completed, he opened the "Parnell Hotel" and ran the "House of Gabler, Perfumers" from the third floor. He manufactured cosmetics and perfumes for some 30 years. In Franklin County, Pennsylvania, Robert wed Vesta Norine Monn on 24 Oct 1946.

Ten years prior to his passing, he and his last wife Vera Lillian (Cook) Gable were antique dealers, operating the House of Gabler which was situated on 71 North Main street.
