Sister Alice Hemans, 59, of St. Mary-of-the-Woods died at 4:50 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2006, in Mother Theodore Hall. She was an educator.
The former Alice Janet Hemans was born July 17, 1946, in Orlando, Fla., to John Gullans Hemans and Margaret Mary Cutter Hemans. Survivors include her mother of California; one sister, Kathryn Mescall and her husband, Michael of Foster City, Wash.; and one brother, James Hemans and his wife, Linda of Mukilteo, Wash.
She attended Mount Calvary Grade School in Forrestville, Md., high school at Le Reine Suitland, Md./Satellite in Satellite Beach, Md., received her bachelor of arts degree in history at St. Mary's Dominican College in New Orleans; and her master of arts degree in education for major private school administration from University of San Francisco.
She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Aug. 16, 1991, professed First Vows on June 26, 1994 and Final Vows on Aug. 15, 1998. She taught in schools in Indiana and Massachusetts. In her 14 years as a Sister of Providence, she was a teacher for eight years at Ritter Jr./Sr. High School in Indianapolis. In 1998-2000, she traveled to Massachusetts where she taught 7th grade at St. Mary Star of the Sea School in Beverly, Mass., and continued in the same school from 2000-2004 as principal of the school. She then returned to the Sisters of Providence Motherhouse at St. Mary-of-the-Woods for her ministry of prayer.
Commentary prayer is 6:15 p.m. Friday in Church of the Immaculate Conception, followed by Mass of Christian Burial with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus officiating. Burial is in the Cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
