Carl Edward Bttner, 73, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church, with. Dr. Allen D. Call officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Bitner was born March 20, 1923, in Queen City, Mo., the son of Elmer O. and Helen E. (Turner) Bitner. He was raised in the De Smet, S.D. area. He married Audrey R. Johnson on July 7, 1948, in De Smet. The couple lived in Huron, S.D. for 21 years, before moving to Sioux City in 1970.

He drove a truck for many years, while living in Huron. He worked for the Bomgaars Store in Sioux City, until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0007 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1776 in Huron. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Carolyn Bitner of Sioux City, Susan and her husband Jud Van Dusen of Brandon, S.D. and Mary Spencer of South Sioux City; five grandchildren, Andrea, Scott, Jeff, Kellie, and Jane; two great-grandsons; three brothers, Ralph and his wife Kathleen of Maple Valley, Wash., Leslie of De Smet, S.D. and Harold and his wife Faith of Santa Clara, Calif.; and a sister and her husband, Dorothy and Oren Hooten of Hayward, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Roy.
