VANSANT, Va. — Rex Phillip Spencer, 76 years of age, of Vansant, VA, passed away Monday, March 7, 2016 at the Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, TN, following an extended illness.

Born in Grundy, VA, he was the son of the late Ray Spencer and Lola Burnett Hogston. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, became a Christian as a teenager and became a member of Vansant Presbyterian Church in August 1962 where he served as Clerk of the Session. Rex graduated from Grundy High School in 1958 and in August of 1958 enlisted in the United States Marines proudly served our country for 3-years. After leaving the Marines, he and David Shortt started S&S Paving Co. and operated for several years and then was joined in the company by John Shortt and operated the company for a total of 33-years in all. He was owner/operator of Spencer Motor Sales for 28-years. He was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle and friend to all.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Dale Hogston.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 53-years, Mary Ruth Shortt Spencer; his sister, Mazie Spencer Fuller, Deel, VA; Stepbrother: Bill Hogston, Hudson, FL; Adopted Brother: Ricky Hogston, Big Rock, VA;

Funeral Services for Rex Phillip Spencer will be conducted Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Phyllis Cantor and Rev. Brad Napier officiating. Burial will follow in the Deel Cemetery at Deel, VA. Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. till services begin at 2:00 P.M. Active Pallbearers will be Pollard Shortt, Chris Shortt, Billy Helton, Mark Helton, Bill Stiltner, Willie Breeding, Bryce Shortt, Bailey Shortt, Jordan Ramey, Les Stacy and Nicholas Chase. Honorary Pallbearers will be David Shortt, Jim Childress, Members and Officers of the Vansant Presbyterian Church and Employees of Spencer Motors.
