Mr. and Mrs. T W Bowers arrived in Levelland from Rule, Texas on Oct 12, 1921 and promptly bought the only store in town. The Bowers lived in the rear of the 25 by 40 foot brick structure for the first year, and then purchased the school building to convert into a four-room residence.
Their store furnished groceries and feed to ranches in those days, serving the Spade, Coble, and Mallet. They were selling Spade from $150 to $200 in groceries and feed per month. "When we saw lights coming across the plains toward the store, we knew they were coming here as there was no other place to go at that time. We would keep the store open until we served them before closing" Mrs. Bowers said.
Mrs. Bowers is generally credited with having suggested the name Levelland after the name Hockley City was rejected by the U. S. Postal Service.

This BIO is largely excerpted/adapted from an article originally appearing in the Hockley County Herald, October 20, 1949 as quoted in Lillian Brasher's "Hockley County 1921 – 1971, The First Fifty Years".
