Byron, or Ron as he was known, was born on March 11, 1938 at Evanston Hospital to Maurine Taylor Coon and Byron Samuel Coon of Evanston, IL. His parents came from the central part of the state of Illinois near Bloomington.
His father's family came from Germany in the early part of the eighteen hundreds. They first settled in New York and Pennsylvania before moving on to Illinois.
His mother's forebears were French Huguenots who came to Illinois from Virginia and Kentucky. One of his Taylor ancestors was the surveying partner of a young George Washington and another designed and built the original State House in Springfield, IL.
Ron grew up on the North Shore of Chicago, living in Indian Hill, Kenilworth and Evanston. He attended Joseph Sears Grade School and New Trier High School. He also attended Kenilworth Union Church from the time he was a child until he left Chicago.
Ron graduated from Northwestern University where he became a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He also received an MBA degree from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Business. It was at Northwestern that Ron met Ann Honnaker who became his wife. They were married in 1962 and had two daughters, Suzanne Maurine Coon and Carolyn Dwayne Drummond Coon.
Ron and Ann later divorced, but Ron was still an important part of their lives and upbringing.
Upon completion of his Master's Degree, he went to work for General Finance Corp., a business that was founded by his grandfather, James S. Coon and uncle, Owen L. Coon.
When Ron started with the company, his father, Byron, was the CEO of General Finance.
Ron was instrumental in setting up the first computer programming for the company.
He later became a Supervisor for the small loan department and developed and started the first sales finance program at General Finance Corp.
After the company was sold in the late 1960's, Ron worked for Grimm Venture Capital Company and the Illinois Company, a brokerage firm, with his good friend, Tom Haider.
In the 1980's, Ron and his friend and life partner, Todd Ward, bought an old motor home and traveled extensively throughout Mexico and the western part of the United States.
Ron loved the summers that he and his brother, Tom, and their parents spent at their wonderful lodge on Big Crawling Stone Lake in Lac du Flambeau, WI. He spent many happy summers there with not only his parents and brother, Tom, but also half brother and sister, James and Audrey Coon.
After Byron and Maurine sold their Wisconsin home and moved to Highlands, NC, Ron missed not going to Wisconsin. Ron and Todd Ward, his partner for nearly 30 years, decided to buy a small home not far from where he spent his summers. They made many improvements to their property. When Ron's health started to fail, he decided it was time to sell.
Ron lived in a condominium on LaSalle Street in Chicago.
In the late 80's, he sold the condominium and moved to Cedar Rapids, IA, where his daughter, Carolyn, lived.
He resided there until his death.
Ron and Todd had two beloved dogs, Ty for Tycoon and Tas for Tasmanian Devil.
They still live with Todd who loves them.
Ron also had a beautiful granddaughter, Elizabeth Greif, daughter of Suzanne, who he took a great interest in, albeit from a distance.
He was extremely proud of her.
Ron was predeceased by his parents and his brother, James.
Ron leaves behind Todd Ward; daughters, Suzanne and Carolyn; granddaughter, Elizabeth Greif; sister, Audrey Stepman; brother, Tom Coon (Judith); niece, Elizabeth McIntosh (Gregory); nephew, Thomas Coon (Lynne); and five great-nieces and nephews, Gregory, Graham and Thomas McIntosh, Madeline and Jack Coon; and former wife, Ann Coon Ryan.
The family would like to thank Ron's longtime caregiver, Beverly Davis, for all the help and love she bestowed upon Ron. Also, Rose, Tanya, Paula, Bea, Tiffany, Laura, Molly and Cheryl.
The family is so very grateful.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Kenilworth Union Church, 211 Kenilworth Avenue, Kenilworth, IL, 60043. Memorial Service will be held on Friday, Oct. 26, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery, 9900 Gross Point Road, Skokie, IL.
