John Holland was born in 1856 in Wilkinson County to William G Holland and Rebecca C Wheeler. John lost his father in the first year of the Civil War and was raised by his mother and stepfather, William McCullur.

John and his wife, Louella Hooks Holland moved to the Blue Water area several years prior to his death. John, a Wagon Driver, unexpectedly met his death one cold March morning while stopped on the way to his job. He was standing near burning stumps when logs dislodged and pinned him to the ground. No one was around to rescue him. He burned to death.
He is buried at Blue Water Baptist Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
