2020 in La Mesa. She was born April 30, 1937, in San Diego, to Edward and Helen (Knox)
Oehser, and was a graduate of Helix High's Class of 1955.
A San Diego girl born and raised, she had an intrepid heart and was always open to the next
adventure, whether it was a small journey, like moving across the city or state, or a larger one
like moving across the country; she lived in Washington, Idaho, Montana, Kansas, South
Carolina, Hawaii, and of course, California. And because the United States wasn’t big enough to
contain her love of new experiences, she trekked to places like Mexico, New Zealand, Tasmania,
Italy, Spain, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, even living in Australia for a time. A
fearless traveler, she’d often lead her six children to the beaches of San Felipe on the Gulf of
California in Mexico, or to Rosarito Beach on the Pacific coast of the Baja peninsula.
Sally was a deeply spiritual person, with Christianity being central to her life; as a younger
woman, regardless of how busy she was raising her kids and working full time, she’d always set
aside time in the early morning to read the Bible and drink her coffee, and she continued that
practice throughout her life. Her involvement with the church was constant and durable, whether
she was teaching Sunday School, or leading Bible study as a Core Leader in the Community
Bible Study organization. It was with notable grace that she faced her impending passing; she
did not fear it, because she had the kind of faith that surpasses all understanding; a simple and
assured belief that she would soon be meeting Jesus.
In addition to the joy her faith brought her, she found continual happiness in her large and still
growing family. Sally was a loving and nurturing mother whose six children were the source of
her greatest pride. Amazingly, she managed to believe -- and convince each child -- that they
were her favorite. Some might say that Sally saw the world through rose-colored glasses, but
they were the best kind of glasses: she possessed a positivity and love that encouraged everyone
around her to blossom, and she freely passed that pride and joy down through generations,
sharing it generously with her fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Sally joins her parents, her sister Nanette, and her brother Ed in heaven.
She is survived by her children Gary (Jean), Tom (Lori), Richard (Sandrine), Dave (Julie),
Merri, Karen (Jeff), her grandchildren Ben, MacKenzie, John Paul, Max, Grace, Zach, Anna,
Sophie, Hannah, Joshua, Nick, Becky, Konner, Kassidy, and her great-grandchildren Margot,
Lourdes, Rosie, Lila, and Jack. Sally was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who met her life smiling, with passion and enthusiasm, lighting up every room she entered.
