Joan Ann Grether Garmong, of Harlingen, Texas, passed away on September 8, 2002, in Houston, after a valiant battle against cancer. She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend.

Joan is survived by her son, Michael R. Flewelling of Houston; her grandchildren and a daughter-in-law. Joan was born in the Bronx, New York on March 6, 1932. After moving to Texas in the late 50's, Joan served as the first City of Harlingen meter maid. She and her first husband, William A. For thirty years, she served as an Employment Counselor and Supervisor at the Texas Employment Commission connecting the unemployed with careers. She retired in 1993.

Joan loved to dance to county western and jazz at Elks Lodge #1889, where she was a Doe. She also enjoyed betting the races and traveling especially to Las Vegas for fun and to Houston to see her grandchildren. With her speech therapist Jim Culbertson, she helped organize the Lost Chord Club, a Harlingen support group for tracheotomy survivors. She and John were active members of the First Presbyterian Church in Harlingen.

Immediate family will honor her with a quiet graveside service Thursday, September 12, 2002, led by Dr. James Cory of the First Presbyterian Church of Corpus Christi.
