Our beautiful and beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Roma Jeline Pegram, left this world to be with her Lord in Heaven on November 12, 2020 at the age of 102. Jeline was one of the last survivors of her generation of dear friends and peers – the great ladies of “old” Midlothian, Texas. Those who grew up in Midlothian in the Forties, Fifties, and Sixties knew all these wonderful women very well and now understand what they all meant to our town and the many contributions each of these women made to the quality of everyone’s life in Midlothian.
Jeline was born near Midlothian on a farm in the rural Ellis County settlement known as Long Branch on June 29, 1918, as the fourth child of Sidney Willis Allen and Florence Grimes Allen. Sidney Willis Allen passed away in 1958 and Florence Grimes Allen passed away in 1968. Jeline was a devoted daughter to her parents, and was the tireless caretaker for her mother, Florence, after Sid’s death. Jeline had six brothers and sisters, all of whom, along with their spouses, predeceased her: Gladys Allen Gammon (m. Elzie Gammon), Berniece Allen Munden (m. Grady Munden), John Lewis Allen (m. Linnie Earl West), Cleta Mae Allen Rothrock (m. John D. Rothrock), Richard Hill (Billy) Allen (m. Marie Johnston) and Troy Lee Allen (died in infancy). Jeline was the last survivor of her generation in both the Sidney Willis Allen family and in her husband’s family, the Eugene Huse Pegram family.
Jeline married her handsome sweetheart, Milton Huse Pegram, on November 22, 1936, in Waxahachie, Texas at the home of her aunt and uncle, Lela Grimes Stephenson and Walkup Stephenson, and they were married for more than 63 years at the time of Milton’s death in July of 2000. Jeline and Milton were loving, selfless parents to their one child, Melissa Pegram Dunn. Jeline is survived by her daughter, Melissa, and her son-in-law, Ernest L. Dunn and by her grandchildren, Anne Hay Burgio, Monica Esposito, Ellen Harry-Henrard, Matthew Dunn, Adam Dunn, and Nathaniel Dunn. Jeline is also survived by her loving nieces and nephews, Danny Allen and wife, Jeanne, Dan Spearman and wife, Cheryl, Robert Bruce Pegram, Linda Pegram Golden and husband, Ron Golden, Janis Pegram Tey and husband, Larry, Debra Allen McWaters and husband, Ed, Ronald Pegram and wife, Becky, Mark Allen and wife, Jennifer, and many dear friends. Jeline was preceded in death by her nieces, Patricia Munden Black, Peggie Spearman Western and her nephew, Sidney Milton Rothrock. Serving as Pallbearers are Jeline’s nephews, Danny Allen, Dan Spearman, Robert Bruce Pegram, Ronald Pegram, Mark Allen, Ron Golden, Larry Tey, and Ed McWaters. Honorary Pallbearers are members of the Midlothian Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Jeline was baptized in the First Methodist Church of Midlothian, Texas on August 10, 1930 and was a member there for more than 80 years, where she took delight in singing in the church choir. She served as a long-time member of the Alderdice Sunday School Class and the Woman’s Home Missionary Society, now known as the United Methodist Women. In her devotion to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and to the Methodist Church, Jeline taught generations of pre-school children’s Sunday School classes and could always be counted on to “do her part” and help in any way she was needed. She was a loyal member of the Midlothian Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she served at least one time in most every capacity and was much loved as the official “Grandmother” of the Chapter. Jeline was also a long-time member of the Midlothian Home Demonstration Club and was a consummate homemaker. She was locally famous as a hostess and a wonderful cook, being especially known for her beautiful and delicious chocolate cream pie. Jeline and Milton were known for their hospitality and loved to host their many friends for games of dominoes, family parties and holiday get-togethers.
Jeline was an outgoing, loving friend to many and a loving daughter, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt and neighbor. Jeline is well remembered for her beauty, her energy and indomitable spirit, her sense of humor and quick wit, her plain-spoken honesty, and her good-natured affection for all. Jeline’s strongest expression of disapproval was deeming someone to be a “stinkweed”. She also freely used this description as a term of affection to tease her friends and loved ones. Jeline’s life is an inspiring testimony to her innocent, loving heart, her enormous personal and spiritual courage, and her unfailing strength and determination in the face of the many daunting challenges she faced during her life.
Jeline is now with her beloved Milton, and all her loved ones and friends who have preceded her to Heaven. She is at peace in her Savior’s loving arms. Our loss is Heaven’s gain.
