John was one of the sons of John Jefferson “J.J.” Prentice and Rhoda “Rhodie” Aycock, born in Cullman, Cullman Co., AL.

The first census in which he appears is 1900, when he incorrectly appears as John H. Prentice, at home with his brothers and parents. By 1910, he is married (wife, Lillian) and living in Mississippi with his wife, kids, mother, and brother Jesse. Next door is his brother, Jim and his wife.

John had married Lillian Haynes Wallace, daughter of Albert Richard Wallace and Ida Mae Belle Shackelford, on 11 March 1906 in Alcorn Co., MS. Their known children were Virgie Lee Prentice Hayman and John “Jack” Thomas Prentice.

Lillian had a son by Rufus Laurence “Larry” Bevis by 1913, placing John and her divorce between that 1910 census and, presumably, 1912. She then remarried again (to an Edwards) and divorced again.

Then, things change: John is apparently remarried, himself, to E. Pearl Lee on 20 March 1916 in Madison Co., TN. She appears on his WWI Registration, which finds him in the Maury County Jail in Columbia, TN (though it indicates they are residents of Waterloo, Lauderdale Co., AL) and the two appear in the 1920 Census in Gibson Co., TN. Oddly, there is an April 1923 real estate transfer in Huntsville, Madison Co., AL from Bruce T. Smith and wife to E. Pearl Prentice…?

As for his kids, in 1920, Virgie and the young John are living with Lillian’s parents in Tyronza, Cross Co., AR. By 1930, John is living with his mother and stepfather, while Virgie had married. As of 1940, young John had married and went by “Jack.”

We next find the elder John in Arcadia, Desoto Co., FL in 1940 (and in Zephyrhills, Pasco Co., FL in 1935; it should be noted that his nephew—via his elder brother Robert/Jeff—Clinton Lee Prentice and family were also in the town at that time), listed as widowed. It is possible this referred to second wife, Pearl.

John died on 24 September 1957 in Ocala, Marion Co., FL, but is buried in Arcadia. His death certificate confirms his parentage, but incorrectly gives him two middle names—the name of his brother, Jesse Lee! The informant was his son (of Tulsa, OK), who knew his grandfather’s name, but not his father’s, nor his father’s place of birth. John is listed as a lawnmower repairman. This dovetails with so many in his immediate family who were “fix-its.”
