We next find the elder John in Arcadia, Desoto Co., FL in 1940 (and in Zephyrhills, Pasco Co., FL in 1935; it should be noted that his nephew—via his elder brother Robert/Jeff—Clinton Lee Prentice and family were also in the town at that time), listed as widowed. It is possible this referred to second wife, Pearl.
John died on 24 September 1957 in Ocala, Marion Co., FL, but is buried in Arcadia. His death certificate confirms his parentage, but incorrectly gives him two middle names—the name of his brother, Jesse Lee!
