William enlisted as a Private in the Confederate Army, Co.K, 52nd Virginia Infantry Regiment. He was wounded in the Battle of Cold Harbor on July 20th, 1864 and died a few days later on July 23rd.

William was married to Louisa Smith of Rockbridge County, Virginia. They were married on Oct. 20th, 1849 in Bath County, VA.
