Sister Marieanne Lebel
Died November 28 2009

LeBEL, Sister Marianne Sister Marianne LeBel, "Sister Mary Louis" of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas died Saturday (November 28, 2009) at St. Mary Home. A native of East Hartford, Sister was one of seventeen children born to James and Matilda (Dube) LeBel. Knowing from an early age she wanted to dedicate her life to God, Sister Marianne entered the Sisters of Mercy on June 27, 1933 at the age of sixteen and professed vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and the service of the poor, sick and ignorant on January 2, 1936. She was "the senior member" of the Connecticut community, having celebrated her Diamond Jubilee (75 years) last year. Sister Marianne was an educator during the early years of her religious life, teaching primary grades in Catholic schools in Hartford, New Haven and Norwich before embarking on ministries in the health field. An LPN with certificates in Gerontology and Pharmaceuticals, Sister served, at various times, as a pharmacy assistant, nurse, and Resident Coordinator at St. Agnes Home, St. Mary Home and Mercyknoll. In her pre-retirement years, she worked with the Hartford Archdiocesan Office of Communications, and in retirement from active ministry, volunteered as receptionist at the Sisters of Mercy Administrative offices. Sister Marianne was a quiet but feisty woman with a gentle and gracious manner who loved and valued her religious vocation, friendship, and family. Her deep faith and a quick wit carried her through her 76 years as a Sister of Mercy. The last of her siblings, Sister Marianne leaves a large family of nieces and nephews as well as her sisters in community. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Tuesday at 6 PM in the St. Mary Home chapel. Calling hours will precede the funeral from 3-5 PM. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery on Wednesday at 9 AM. Those wishing to make a donation in Sister's memory are asked to consider the Sisters of Mercy, 55 East Cedar St., Newington, 06111. Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
